Mahabaleshwar Temple Gokarna Story

Mahabaleshwar Temple story is associated with Ravan. Where ravana worshiped Lord shiva at Mount Kailash for the aatmalinga to attain immortality. Lord shiva being happy from the Ravan gave him aatmalinga derived from his chest and said he can place it where he wants it to be placed. Ravan was taking that linga to his capital Lanka. But when it was time for his evening prayers, he gave it to a Brahmin kid and strictly told him not to put it on the ground. Turns out, people believe that the kid was actually Lord Ganesha in disguise, and that's how it went down.

Ravana got all angry when the kid intentionally dropped the Shiva Linga and came back. He started chasing after the kid and his cows. He managed to grab one cow by the ear, and that's how this place got the name Gokarna - go meaning cow and karna meaning ear. Ravana tried really hard to remove the Linga by force, but only some upper parts fell off and temples were built in all those places. There are temples named Surathkal, Dharwad, Gunavant Shivar, Murudeshwar, and Shijeshvar.

All as a result of Ravana's defeat against the power of the Shiva Linga. He even gave it the name Mahabaleshwar.
