Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga Story

It is said that when there was a misunderstanding between Lord Ganesha and Karthikeya about marriage, Lord Shiva gave them a task to take a round of the world and whoever finishes first is the winner. Karthikeya mounted his peacock and started the race, while Lord Ganesha went around his parents saying that they are his world and going around them means going around the world.

Pleased by this Lord Ganesha won the race and Lord Shiva got him married to Riddhi and Siddhi.

On the return of Karthikeya when he got to know about Lord Ganesha's Marriage he was upset so he decided to leave and stay on Mount Krounch.

When Lord Shiva and Parvati went to see him there Karthikeya left Mount Krounch and moved elsewhere. Due to this Lord Shiva and Parvati waited there hoping Karthikeya to return.

Since then the place became a shrine for Jyotirlinga where it is said that both Shiva and Parvati had resided.

The name Mallikarjun was given said that Mallika stands for Parvati and Arjun stands for Shiva. At Mallikarjun both reside at this place.
