History of the Baidyanatha Jyotirlinga, Jharkhand

The story behind the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is quite beautiful. Ravana, who is the most holy worshipper of Lord Shiva, prayed to Shiva seeking boons of the almighty. As a sacrifice, he offered each of his ten heads one by one. Lord Shiva was pleased by his sacrifice, came down and cured Ravana. The act of curing Ravana, made Lord Shiva equal to the doctor called vaidhya or baidhya.

Besides seeking almighty boons from Lord Shiva, Ravana requested Lord Shiva to make Lanka his home. The Lord said that the Shivalinga would be as good as his presence. Lord Shiva placed a condition that he had to carry the Shivalinga without keeping it on the ground, if he did the place would be the site of Shivalinga.

As he was transporting the shivling to Lanka, Lord Shiva feared the consequences of Linga at Ravana’s Kingdom, therefore Lord Shiva requested Lord Varuna, god of waters, to break his journey. Lord Varuna entered Ravana's stomach and made the demon king want to relieve himself. Ravana fell and to relieve himself he handed the Shivalinga to a Brahmin to hold it (disguise of Lord Vishnu). The Brahmin put the Shivlinga on the ground and disappeared from there, hence, this spot was Deoghar.

When he came back, he realized that he was tricked, he tried to displace the linga with all his might but wasn't able to. Hence, he offered homage there itself.
