Kashi Vishwanath Temple is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh India. The deity worshipped here is the Vishveshwara or Vishwanathan, which is also called the “Lord of the Universe”. The most prominent festival of the Temple is Maha Shivaratri. 

It is one of the 12th Jyotirlingas and is believed to be the last Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. Kashi Vishwanath Temple was destroyed by Aurangzeb in 1669 and Gyanvapi Mosque was built. The temple is built on the West Ganges river. It is believed to take a dip before you enter the Temple to attain liberation or Moksha.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is popularly called as Golden Temple because around 800 kg of gold is used in the plating of its spires and domes. The main Shiva Linga is 60 cm tall with a 90 cm circumference and is made on a silver pedestal. The Temple also has a Jnana Vapi well, also called a Wisdom well, which is commonly believed to convey knowledge and enlightenment.

History of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi 

Kashi Vishwanath Temple has been found in Purana, including in the Kashi Khanda section of Skanda Purana. It was destroyed multiple times during the medieval period. Firstly, destroyed by Qutub uddin Aibak while defeating the King of Kannauj. 

It was rebuilt during the Delhi Sultanate reign of Iltutmish and was demolished again during Sikandar Lodhi’s time. As discussed, Raja Man Singh rebuilt it in 1669 but Aurangzeb destroyed it and built Gyanvapi Mosque. 

The domes of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, plated in gold were donated by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh, while silvers were donated by the Bhonsle of Nagpur. Great saints also visited the Temple, like Adi Shankaracharya, Goswami Tulsidas, Guru Nanak Dev, etc. 

It is a collection of smaller shrines located in the small lane called Vishwanath Galli near the river. The temple is built in a quadrangle with temples dedicated to various gods like Kaalbhairav, Dhandapani, Vishnu, Vinayaka, etc. The Temple has three parts: first is the spire in the temple, second is the golden dome, and third is the golden spire holding a flag and trident.
