Festivals Celebrated at Kamakhya Temple
Ambubachi Mela
The Ambubachi Mela is the biggest religious gathering in Northeast India. It's also known as "Ameti" or "Amoti." The word "Ambu" means water, and "Vasi" or "Bachi" means flowing. The mela takes place during the monsoon season, around the 21st or 22nd of June, when the sun is in the Mithuna zodiac and enters the first Pada of the Adra constellation. It's believed that during this time, the Mother Earth goddess enters her annual menstruation period.
Deodhani or Devadhwani Mela
The Deodhani or Devadhwani Mela (Manasa Puja) starts on the Sravana Sankranti day and lasts for three days. This is when the Deodhani Nritya, a shamanistic dance form, takes place. The dancers represent the spiritual power of a god or goddess, and people flock to the Kamakhya Temple to witness this performance.
Durga Puja
