History of the Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram
About the temple, it is mentioned in Epics and Puranas. According to Bhagavata Purana, Balarama visited the temple, bathed in Padmatheertham, and made several offerings.
To praise the Lord Padmanabha, Nammalwar, a 9th-century poet, and twelve Vaishnavites of Alvar tradition compose the lyrics. According to historians, it is said that the Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple was established on the first day of Kali Yuga.
Infamous Grantha, “Ananthasayana Mahatmya," states that it was established by the Tulu Brahmin hermit named Divakara Muni. In the 950th year of Kali Yuga, the idol was reinstalled, and in the 960th, King Kotha Marthandan built Abhi Sravana Mandapam.
Story of the Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram
This story is about Ananthasayana Mahatmya, also known as Divakara Muni, who was a great Vishnu Bhakta. Maha Vishnu appeared as a lovely child in front of the Divakara Muni. He requested God to allow him to stay with him. The child made his stay conditional with him on the condition that Sanyasi has to treat the child with respect.
The hermit took great care of the child and tolerated all his childish pranks. One day, Sanyasi was in deep meditation of his prayers and the child took the ‘salagram’ (used during worship) and put it in his mouth. This was not tolerated further by the Divakara Muni. The child was chastised and as per the condition, the child vanished in front of his eyes.
While going, he said that if Divakara Muni wishes to see him again, he can visit the Ananthankadu. Lately, Divakara Muni realized who the child guest had been. Divakara Muni was in inconsolable grief.
He reached a wooded area near the sea coast and saw a glimpse of the child disappearing in the ‘Ilippa’ tree that immediately fell to the ground and was assumed to be the form of Sree Maha Vishnu.
Inside the temple, Mandapam banquet facilities are available, like Sri Vaikundom, Ananthasayanam, and Bhajanappura Kalyana Mandapam.
