Somapalle Temple or Somapalyam Temple is situated in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. This temple is also known as Chennakesava Temple and is dedicated to Krishna avtar of lord Vishnu. Name Chennakesava means Handsome Keshav.Â
This temple is build by the Cholas and was later developed by the kings of Vijayanagara in early 16th century. Somapalyam Temple is known for its architectural design, artistic pillars, mural paintings and sculptures.Â
There is a 52 feet high Dhwajastambha (monolith pillar) with beautiful carvings throughout. After entering through main Gopuram, there is a stone chariot similar to that of Hampi but smaller in size. Temple ceilings are painted with scenes of Ramayan many of the scenes are still well preserved.Â
The Kalyan Mandapam is the main attraction of this temple it made by blackstones. It is designed in a way that idols to whom kalyanotsavam is happening is blessed by all the goddesses from above. There are four pillar, each one with unique design.Â
Gola Mandapam was built in the honour of warriers and workers of that time.Â
