Vadakkanthara Temple Palakkad: Timings, Pooja Cost, History

Located in Kerala, Vadakkanthara Temple, Palakkad is also known as Sri Thirupuraikkal Bhagavathy Temple. The main deity here is Goddess Kannaki Amman in Parvathy form. It is the only place in Kerala to see and worship Goddess Kanaki in full idol form.

The main highlights of the Vadakkanthara Temple, Palakkad are its architectural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and religious significance. Special poojas are conducted here on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Vadakkanthara Temple, Palakkad History

In Silappadikaram, the Madurai king wrongly sentenced Kovalan. When Kannagi asked for justice, the king realized his mistake and died suddenly. Kannagi burnt Madurai and came to settle down as Goddess in Kodsungaloore. 

On her way, she rested under a fig tree in Vadakkanthara where the idol was formed. There is no roof over the goddess here. During the heavy rains, the oil lamps in front of the Goddess are neither disturbed nor put out. 

It is also believed that Lord Shiva created Kannagi along with Kannu kottu Bhagawathy and Kannadathu Bhagawathy to kill Dharuga. Kannagi killed Dharuka and became a human being. She also burnt Madurai and returned with the sisters to Kerala. King Kesari Varma built the temples for the three of them.
