Chilkur Balaji Temple History
It was believed that Akkanna and Madanna, the uncles of Bhakta Ramdas, constructed Chilkur Balaji Temple, half a millennium years ago. A mythological story highlights that once there lived a devotee who visited Tirupati every year.
Because of a serious illness, he could not go to Tirupathi. The Lord came in his dream and said he was in the nearby jungle. The devotee reached the spot and spotted a molehill in the place where he saw the Lord in his dream. He started digging it up with the axe.
The axe stuck below the chin and chest of the idol of the Lord, which was covered by the molehill. The blood started flooding and turning into scarlet. The devotee was surprised to watch it. He also heard a voice saying flood it with cow’s milk.
He found Lord Balaji’s Swayambu idol with Bhoodevi and Sridevi after he did so. This idol was installed and the temple was built. During the Chinese aggression in 1963, the statue of Ammavaru was installed in the temple and was named Rajalakshmi.
The idol’s unique feature is that three hands are seen holding a lotus statue and the fourth hand facing toward the lotus feet. It signifies the doctrine of Sarangathi
