Kapaleeshwarar Temple History
Pallavas built this temple in the 7th Century. According to the historians it was supposed to be the original temple. When the Portuguese acquired Mylapore, they demolished the temple. Kapaleeshwarar Temple was rebuilt 300 years ago by the Vijayanagara kings.Â
There was a mythological story that Goddess Uma wanted to understand the meaning of the Na Ma Shi Va Ya mantra and the significance of sacred ash from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva accepted and started teaching.Â
She was distracted by a peacock that infuriated Lord Shiva. He cursed her to perform penance by going to Thondai Nadu. She worshipped Lord Shiva under the sacred Punnai tree near the temple. Lord Shiva was carried out by her devotion and called her Karpagavalli.
