Sri Mukhalingam Temple is on the Vamsadhara River Bank.It is a blend of the Dravidian and Kalinga-style architecture. Tourists, pilgrims, and historians are attracted to the architecture and sculpture here.Â
Sri Mukhalingam Temple History
Kamarnava-II, son of Danarnava established the Sri Mukhalingam Temple in the 8th Century AD. It is a significant landmark of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, later called the Codaganga Dynasty.Â
This region was believed to have a unique type of tree named Madhuka. According to local people, Lord Shiva appeared in the Madhuka tree. He did it to free Gandharvas who were born as tribes due to the curse of Vamadeva Maharshi.Â
There is a huge mud pot behind the main deity. It is bigger than the door of the sanctum. There is a belief that a potter named Naganna lived there. Being Lord Shiva’s devotee, he offered puja every day and asked for the child as a blessing.
He planned to offer a golem of milk but he could not take it to Lord Shiva. So he left it at the entrance door. The next day, the priest found the golem behind the deity and Naganna was blessed with a child.
